Allergies: Symptoms, Triggers, and Our Approach

Allergies are an abnormal reaction by a person's immune system to a certain substance that does not cause any reaction in others. The human body produces antibodies, and when a person has allergies the body's immune system identifies a normally nontoxic substance as a harmful invader and reacts accordingly.

The reactions can vary from mild itchiness and rash to life-threatening anaphylactic shock. There are many different types of allergens and each can cause a reaction in its own way. The type of reaction that occurs depends on the substance and the manner it was introduced to the body.

Types of Allergic Reactions

Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever)

Can cause an itchy, runny nose; sneezing; and watery, red eyes.

Mild to Moderate

Shellfish / Contact Allergies

Touching may cause blisters; consuming can cause airway swelling requiring emergency treatment or EpiPen.

Severe

Food Allergies

Immediate tingling of lips and mouth; swelling around eyes, lips, and tongue; hives; and possibly anaphylaxis.

Moderate to Severe

Insect Sting Allergies

Large swelling at sting site, itching, hives, coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, and potentially anaphylaxis.

Severe

Drug Allergies

Typical allergy signs and symptoms; can be fatal if not caught and given proper medical attention in time.

Severe

Anaphylaxis: A Medical Emergency

Anaphylaxis, the worst reaction to an allergy, can cause a person to go into shock. If not treated immediately, anaphylaxis can lead to death.

1Drop in blood pressure
2Drastic shortness of breath
3Weak pulse
4Nausea and vomiting
5Loss of consciousness
6Can lead to death if not treated immediately

Ways to Avoid an Allergic Reaction

Keeping a journal can make all the difference in learning as much as possible about what sets off a reaction.

Avoid known triggers — don't expose yourself to substances that cause reactions
Keep a journal or diary to track potential allergens
Record incidentals so your doctor can review for multiple allergies
If allergic to grass, avoid rolling around in it or prolonged exposure
Carry an EpiPen if you have severe allergies
Share your allergy journal with your healthcare provider
